Summer Read

While scouting on NPR today, I read that John Waters has just published a memoir called, "Role Models." The book, as the title implies, is Water's tell-all about those who have inspired him in some way over the years. In a snippet posted on the site, readers learn that Johnny Mathis is just one of the individuals whom Water's discusses in the text. Despite being unemployed and poor, I am going to Amazon immediately to place an order.

Afternoon at the Old Zoo

After reading about the abandoned zoo yesterday, I just had to set out to find the location. I was following some directions that had you take a 2 mile hike prior to arriving at the spot. However, I came to realize that once you park at the merry-go-round at Griffith Park, you can head a bit north to get to the quick path that will take you to the zoo. While a 2 mile hike was fine for today, it is by no means necessary to get to the old cages. Here are a few shots from my digital camera that I snapped. The house-type building, while amazing, was full of the buzzing of hundreds of bees, so if you decide to venture in, be alert!

Louise Bourgeois passed away today. A link to an article about her life and death.

Exploring Los Angeles: Old Zoo Trail

After hiking Griffith Park today and realizing just how many miles of trails there are to explore, I decided to do some online investigating to assist in my next hike selection. I came across this website called Dan's Hiking Pages that really summed up some of the available trails. One in particular that stood out was a trail that detours through the old zoo of Los Angeles.

Hiking this trail is the first thing on my to do list this week. I will post some pictures as soon as I get a chance to check it out!

Oh Happy Day!

Today was the culmination. Graduation. Despite the ill-fated logistics of the traditional graduation cap, the day was fantastic. My parents were in town and David was up bright and early to make the ceremony! While graduation was such a huge accomplishment, I can't help but say my attention was split between the ceremonies and my new dog, Frito. As a graduation gift, David and I went to the LA North Central Animal Shelter and found a little buddy. He was right on display in the front of the shelter. Immediately, I wanted to get him but upon request, I walked around the entire pound to see if there were any other dogs who struck my fancy. The walk was brief and led me straight back to the location where my Frito was initially seen. After playing with him for a few minutes, it became clear that he would be the one to take home. Take a peek. Don't fret about his lampshade. He went in for a routine neuter and needed to refrain from pulling out his stitches. he is doing great!
